Cavities, also known as tooth decay, are a common dental issue that occurs when bacteria in your mouth produce acids that eat away at your teeth. If left untreated, cavities can lead to severe toothache, infection, and even tooth loss. That’s why it’s crucial to address them early.
Dental fillings are a common treatment for cavities that work by filling the hole in your tooth, stopping the decay from progressing further. Choosing the right dental filling can help restore your tooth’s function and appearance. It can also prevent further complications and improve your overall oral health.
You’ll find various dental filling options in Irvine, CA. Each type has its advantages and drawbacks.
Each type of filling has its place, depending on the location and extent of the cavity, your budget, and your personal preferences.
Several factors come into play when choosing a dental filling, and one of the most important is the location of the cavity.
Durability is key for cavities in the back teeth. Amalgam or gold fillings are often the best choices because they can withstand chewing pressure and last for many years.
Aesthetics are more important when it comes to cavities in the front teeth. Composite or ceramic fillings, which your dentist can match to the color of your teeth, are usually the preferred choice.
Cost is another factor to consider. Gold fillings are the most expensive, while amalgam fillings are usually the most affordable.
Your personal health considerations also matter. If you have allergies to certain metals, you’ll want to go with other options.
Finally, your dentist’s recommendation is crucial. They can guide you toward the best choice based on your situation.
Getting a dental filling in Irvine, CA starts with a thorough oral examination. Your dentist will check for signs of cavities, such as toothache or visible holes.
If your dentist detects a cavity, they will likely recommend an X-ray to help determine the extent of the decay. This is critical to know whether a cavity is all you need, or if a more serious procedure, such as a root canal, is necessary.
Before the procedure begins, local anesthesia is usually administered to ensure a pain-free experience. The dentist then prepares the tooth for the filling by removing the decayed part of the tooth.
The dentist cleans the tooth once the decay is removed to ensure no bacteria or debris is left behind. The dentist then places filling material into the cavity and shapes it to match the contour of the tooth.
After the dentist places the filling, they harden it using a special light.
Finally, the dentist checks your bite and makes any necessary adjustments. This ensures comfort and functionality.
After getting a dental filling, proper care is crucial to ensure its longevity.
Good oral hygiene is key, as regular brushing and flossing can prevent further decay. Avoiding hard or sticky foods can also help, as these can dislodge or damage the filling.
Regular dental checkups are another critical component, as these allow your dentist to monitor the condition of the filling.
If you experience sensitivity or discomfort, contact your dentist, as this could indicate a problem with the filling. Early treatment of a failed filling is instrumental in a successful retreatment.
Finding the right dentist to handle dental fillings near you is crucial, as it ensures you get the best care for your teeth.
To find a great dentist near you, ask for recommendations from friends, family, or coworkers. They can provide valuable insight into the dentists they visit.
Online reviews can also be helpful, as they glimpse other patients’ experiences with the dentist and staff. They also give you a great high-level overview via star ratings.

My wife and I went to Aspire Dental for our first visit since we relocated to Irvine. Checking in and making sure my insurance was correct was simple since everything is through their online portal. The office is clean and very high tech. Dr. Kawamoto was very thorough and made sure all my questions were answered. Since I haven't seen the dentist in years I was nervous about my teeth. They had time to do my deep cleaning and even do the fillings I needed done all in one visit. It was completely PAINLESS! I loved how the doctor explained each step to me. I'm very happy with them and I will be returning to do future dental work that I need done!
Been going here over a year now. After many many many many failed dentists in the OC after moving here from northern CA. This office really cares about the patients and explains everything to you. I finally understood what work needed to be done and the cost that I needed to pay after my insurance covered. It was the best experience I've ever had at a dentist. I won't go anywhere else. I fall asleep in the chair and they've caught me snoring, just because I am so comfortable and they are so gentle and handle me with care. They are all so incredible. I appreciate you all. I even take my teenagers there after so many awful pediatric dentists didn't do their fillings correctly and they couldn't eat well on the one side. This happened to two of my kids at other dentists. But this office the staff fixed them right up and they couldn't be happier. Thank you!
I had two gold crowns and one gold filling done at Aspire Dental by Dr. Darcy Kawamoto yesterday (March 2nd, 2022). She explained everything she was doing as she was working one me so there were no surprises to me. She is very gentle, adjusted the crowns multiple times before cementing them down to ensure the prefect fit. It was a great experience.
Dr. Kawamoto and Team have great chemistry. From Doreen at the front desk, to Chan, Cindy, Pooja and Dos - everyone works with cohesion. I was received on a Saturday for 7 fillings and a cleaning. Yes, my sweet teeth have expensive taste. Despite having a full office, everyone took turns working with the Dr to make sure I got out in the allotted time. On one particular tooth, the Dr decided to put a watch on a cavity instead of filling it which saved me some out of pocket $. Their recommendations to fix my uneven bite came without a sales pitch and rather as helpful advice. I’ve had a lot of dental work done over the years and I would not hesitate to give Aspire Dental/Dr. Kawamoto my business again.
I had work done in Huntington Beach and wasn’t able to eat on my left side for YEARS, the nice lady doctor K was able to take the original filling out and miss Chan was able to put new fillings in on that side, they did an amazing job and by the end of the visit I was finally able to eat on that side and flaws, and let me tell you it’s been 7 years since I was able to floss on that side. Overall an amazing experience super sweet people, I would highly recommend to go there excellent music beautiful art work on the walls, and what I loved even more I was able to keep all 28 piercings in my face so that was great lol, they were fast and very gentle lovely to talk to so it was amazing that I was getting my teen done and having a small therapy session. 10/10
